This project was a submission to a logo design competition organised by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, aimed at creating a visual identity that communicates the cultural heritage and essence of Varanasi to both local and global audiences.

The brief
Develop a distinctive visual identity for Varanasi, positioning the city as a living heritage destination that brings together its cultural traditions, spiritual significance, and historic urban character.
The idea behind the mark
The logo merges the Latin-script word Varanasi with the Devanagari-script name Kashi, bringing together two linguistic representations of the same city. The custom geometric letterforms interlock to create a unified typographic composition, symbolising the coexistence of cultural identities and the continuity of tradition. The earthy brown and saffron palette draws on the architectural and spiritual character of Varanasi, while the tagline “The Oldest Living City” reinforces its historical legacy.
